The Philosopy behind the Light College in brief

Any group of people who believe in an idea which they accept as their way of life would also want their future generations to adopt such idea so as to preserve it. The culture of a group of people is what determines the peoples’ civilization, their goals and their way of life.

Based on their culture the people are defined as one unique human entity. Further more it is the culture that distinguishes one group of people from another. This also holds true for the Muslim community.

The meaning of culture in this context includes the thinking and behaviour of a people and what emanates from it including legal system, solutions, knowledge, sciences and the history linked to the culture. If the culture of a given set of people is lost it will lead to the demise of that community as a distinguished set of people, hence the objective of that society and their way of life will be changed and they will be left following the culture of other peoples or nations. As members of the Muslim community, we must therefore strive, using education, to preserve and promote our Islamic culture.

Colonialists, in the 20th century, used to manage their protectorates through a carefully planned strategy aimed at destroying the culture of the people and replacing it with their culture. In this modern time of the 21st century however, the colonialists use their leverage of advanced technology, and the media to sustain their gains and further expand the spread of their culture. Education gave them the advantage. The culture of any group of people forms the personality of its people. It shapes the way a person passes judgment and it also shapes the desires and inclinations of a person.

Therefore preserving the culture of our people in the society is one of our main objectives and a responsibility we must whole heartedly accept. It is this commitment that culminates in to our resolve to venture in to the development of education through establishment of schools in our society. Our commitment was further reinforced by our conviction that education is the most effective agent of development of any nation, the key to achieving aspirations and the reliable tool of transmitting culture. Allah (SWT) called our attention to this fact by revealing the first five verses in the Holy Qur’an dealing with this subject matter. “ Read in the name of your Lord Who created. Created man from a clinging (clot of blood). Read, and your Lord is most bounteous. Who taught by the pen. Taught man what he knew not.” (al Alaq 1 -5).

J. F. Kennedy of the United States of America, was quoted to have said, “Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education”. According to Edward Everett, when a nation is not at war, “Education is a better safeguard of liberty than a standing army”. These remarks further stress the fact that, what we must resolutely strive hard to develop for the good of our community is education.
